Check This Out!

Today at the Mockingbird Station, there was some really cool things that were happening. There were people from Time Warner on motorized sooners with laptops on them for people to try out the new Road Runner Moblie 4G Network. It’s like from the cell phone company’s where you get internet from them and you just hook-up a USB and there you go with the internet, and now it’s from the cable company. There is going to be an event on December 9th at the House of Blues from 6-10 where you can test drive the system with your own laptop, concerts, and a chance to meet Danica Patrick.

We Recommend for District 3 and 9!

Wow, the candidates have been hard at work and now its time to make some endorsements. DISD needs people who will stand-up for the people, not their self. The elections are on December 8th and early elections kick-off tomorrow. Now drum roll please…….

For District 3 we recommend:

Bruce Parrott

Mr. Parrott will not be a rubberstamp when it comes to issues. He is one of our ideal candidates and with his wife who used to be on the board, he knows whats he’s doing. Many of the things that he is going to stand for are for the teachers and students. District 3 needs some really good representation, and he is going to be one of them.

District 9:

Bernadette Nutall

We are still sticking with Bernadette for this round and she almost won the last election on `06 with Ron Price who is not seeking reelection. I really do like the project that she is doing with the Circle of Support and would be around with DISD kids. She seems to have an idea on whats going on with DISD Board and schools and I really think she can make a huge difference in the school board as our next District 9 Representative.

1.      What would be some of the things you would push though the board once you’re elected?

  • I would push through a stronger ethics policy regarding the school board of trustees to insure complete transparency with regards to the board’s business dealings.
  • I would push through enhanced disclosure requirements for the district’s budgeting process.  This would also include more disclosure about submitted and winning bids for the districts vendors.  At present there appears to be too much red tape in obtaining this information versus making it readily accessible through the district.
  • I would push through more community outreach programs for the district to insure higher community and business involvement in the schools in an effort to raise performance, increase resources and enhance support for our schools.

2.      Is there anything going on that needs attention in your district?

  • Schools should never be pitted against other schools.  Instead I would like to see the district implement more cost containment in an effort to channel the savings back into the classroom to raise every school to the same level of funding.  The answer to raising the quality of education in the district is not to make cuts in the classroom.

3.      Last year there were many cuts in the fall and this past May, would there have to been anything to prevent it from happening again?

  • First and foremost an accurate and more disciplined budgeting mechanism must be in place.  The district relies heavily on ‘projected’ revenues versus confirmed revenues.  A more conservative approach would yield positive results with regards to cost containment and minimizing the need for cuts in the classroom.  Additionally the district waited until it was too late to see if there were programs and resources that were not really necessary.  I would like to see a more aggressive and comprehensive program and department evaluation process that is conducted at regular intervals throughout the school year.  Additionally, the district needs to seek counsel on whether some existing vendor contracts can be renegotiated to reflect the challenging financial environment that Dallas ISD is currently navigating.  We have to make sure that we are getting enough “bang for our buck’ with regards to contractors and vendors.

 4.      Any public offices held or ran for?

  • I have not held any public offices.  However, I ran in 2006 for the Dallas ISD Board of Trustee in District 9 and lost by 67 votes.

5.      Do you think that the cuts from the Magnet School and Learning Centers this past May were necessary?

  • No, I don’t believe the cuts were necessary.  As I have indicated earlier, we should be raising the level of funding at all schools which I believe to be possible through cost containment and the elimination of ineffective programs.

6.      If there were one thing you would change the School Board about, what would it be?

  • If there were just one thing that I could change on the school board it would be the restoration of faith/respect of the citizens of Dallas for the board.

7.      Why should people elect you?

I believe that citizens should elect me because:

I bring a unique mix of skills and knowledge to the board. I am a proven bridge builder capable of working with many different individuals and entities to accomplish a common mission and or goal.

Having worked on the ground floor within the district as a Community Liaison I know the challenges that our teachers face in the classroom as well as those of the staff at the school.  I have been able to listen to the concerns of the parents of all of our students as well as local community and business representatives.

Being the Co-Founder and Executive Director Circle of Support, Inc., has allowed me to see just how effective innovative programming can be while also developing budgeting skills and familiarity in the delivery of that programming.

I believe that the citizens should elect me because I represent a change from the status quo of doing business as usual at the expense of the students and employees of Dallas ISD.

I represent the change that is needed to insure that Dallas ISD provides the students with the quality of education that all students deserve while restoring credibility to the board as an entity whose sole mission is putting all children first.

8.      Any final words?

  • I believe that all of the children of Dallas ISD deserve to receive a quality education from Dallas ISD. In providing this, our teachers and staff must be given all of the support that they need. The emphasis in any school district should be on its students and schools, not on the board. Unfortunately the board of Dallas ISD has become ‘the’ story, not the students. This is grossly unfair to the students and undesirable to the citizens of Dallas. The time has come for less grandstanding by the board and more leadership from the board. A board should be invisible and only seen as the guiding hand of the district, not the albatross or weight around the neck of the district. I believe that the board must adhere to the law as it is written and not interpretations to the contrary to justify some board members personal agendas. The time has come to stop playing games and politics with our children’s futures!

What would I push for at DISD if elected?

Dallas ISD is at a crossroads and I believe that it is very critical that the Board and the Administration

-Take strategic and specific steps to move forward with a focus on the classroom and student success.

-The taxpayers and parents want answers and accountability in the DISD School Board and the administration and  the population is shifting dramatically as many students are  seeking charter schools and other options.  Students are dropping out of school and we are facing large budget shortfalls.

-I will focus on new communication with the taxpayers with clear and specific budget and policies provided through town hall meetings and on the internet.  I want students to be a part of the conversations on what makes our schools effective and strong learning environments.

-As a dyslexic therapist, I want to explore the best programs to support all students including the LD students and ensure successful graduation and postsecondary education.  Every student has a talent and gifts that can enable learning to be more creative and interactive.  If a student is struggling with slow reading, let’s help them with new scientific research and methods and do not let them be discouraged.

It is never too late to help a dyslexic.

Problems in District 9?

District 9 is very large and complex with over 35 schools.  I want to study the Board’s recommendations for the bond spending and investigate how it was dispersed among schools.  Schools like Truet  Elementary are overcrowded and do not even have technology out to the 33 portable building on the campus.  Whatever happens with bond funding, we need to make sure our classrooms are safe and ready to go if our number one focus is helping all students achieve and be successful.

Cuts in funding?

The budget shortfall should not have happened.  And, it should never happen again with the expertise and design of a new internal auditing system.

Any public office?

I served as a Presidential appointee under President Bill Clinton.  I was the Secretary of Education’s Regional Administrator in Region VI comprised of Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas, Lousiana and Oklahoma.

Transparency with DISD?

Yes, the taxpayers, parents and students need to fully understand how the dollars are being spent to ensure that  students successfully graduate and be competitive in the 12th largest metropolitan economy in the world- Dallas.

Cuts in funding for Magnet schools?

I do not want to cut funding from any school that is excelling in student achievement.  We need to look into the future and understand that DISD may see huge cuts in funding due to budget shortfalls at the State level.   With  13 years of work for the Texas Senate Education Committee as a chief public policy analyst, I have the experience to help support DISD in the legislative process in Austin.

Change for the school board?

I will focus on Transparency and accountability with taxpayer funding and holding town hall meeting to help build back public trust. And every time I take a vote, I will consider how it will impact teaching and learning in the classroom- that should be the number one priority.

Whole District representation?

I believe that when a person is elected to serve on the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees, that they have a responsibility to serve the entire school because building a strong school helps each individual district.  It is very important to take care of issues that arise in the individual district, but rarely would that be unique and not be occurring in other parts of Dallas ISD.

Why should I be elected?

I have unique experiences that bring new leadership to the Dallas ISD .  As a classroom teacher and dyslexic therapist, I understand the classroom and the many challenges students and teachers deal with.

As a former education policy analyst in Austin and a Federal representative with the U.S. Department of Education, I have unique knowledge of how funding works and what makes an excellent school.

Every student in Dallas ISD deserves a world class education and to graduate and be successful and pursue their dreams.  I want to help this District make that happen for the students, the taxpayers and the parents who work so hard to help their children.

Final words-

How long a student goes to school will predict that student’s success.  A student that graduates from high school and pursues postsecondary education will likely see an 80% increase in their lifetime earnings.  Dallas Community College and the many other postsecondary institutions are ready to meet students where they are and can help them on that journey.

We need to start at home encouraging student’s to pursue their dreams and never set limits for their opportunities.  Let’s reach out and help every student and every family understand the opportunities they have living in this great city.
